What is Lorem Ipsum?

Lorem Ipsum is placeholder text used in design and publishing since the 1500s. It's a scrambled passage of Cicero's "De Finibus Bonorum et Malorum" with words removed or altered so they look like natural Latin without forming meaningful sentences. Designers use it to fill layouts with realistic-looking text density before the actual copy is ready.

The advantage over "Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet" repeated is that Lorem Ipsum varies in word length, paragraph structure, and character distribution — giving a more accurate preview of how real content will look. It also avoids the distraction of readable text during the design phase.

When to use placeholder text.

Wireframes and mockups. When presenting a layout to stakeholders, placeholder text keeps the focus on structure, typography, and spacing rather than copy. Using real text too early can cause feedback to center on wording instead of design.

CSS and typography testing. When building a design system or testing font choices, you need enough text to see how different weights, sizes, and line heights render. Generate a few paragraphs and vary the styles to compare.

Database seeding. When building an app that displays user-generated content (blogs, forums, social feeds), seed the database with Lorem Ipsum to test pagination, truncation, and overflow handling before launch.

Real content. The best approach for final designs is using real content as early as possible. Placeholder text can hide layout problems that only appear with real data — long words, short sentences, missing fields, or content that doesn't fit the expected length. Use Lorem Ipsum during wireframing, then switch to real content as soon as it's available.

Generated content. For database seeding and stress testing, consider using faker.js or similar libraries that produce realistic names, addresses, dates, and other structured data. These are better for testing data-driven layouts where Lorem Ipsum's flat text doesn't represent the variety of real inputs your application will handle.

Tips for using placeholder text effectively.

Keep placeholder text proportional to the final content. If your blog post will be 500 words, generating 2000 words of Lorem Ipsum gives a misleading impression of space. Conversely, too little text makes it impossible to evaluate truncation, line breaks, and overflow behavior. Match the placeholder quantity to the expected real content length.

When presenting to non-technical stakeholders, add a note explaining that the text is placeholder. Without context, some people read the Latin and wonder what it means, which distracts from the design review. A simple comment like "placeholder text — final copy coming soon" keeps the conversation focused.
